Meetup Details

Let’s meet to discuss growing in UX, finding opportunities, building careers, portfolios and more!

What & where:

This will be a relaxed round-table event at Space4.tech coworking space, just next to Finsbury Park tube station (that’s on the Victoria line, a couple of stops north from Kings Cross). There's a map on their website.We will also minute the event on the IxDF London Slack (direct link to the Slack channel for the event is here). Afterwards we can decamp to the nearby WB Yeats pub too.

Format:

A pretty relaxed and constructive round-table in the Space4 big room, followed by drinks. :) We'll have a projector and a laptop so we can look at things and collaborate on screen too.

I’ll put together a loose agenda, and to help our discussions it would be great if some people could please offer to speak for a minutes on any career / finding-work related topic. Maybe you'd like to speak about a great development opportunity you’ve done and can recommend to others. Or what has / hasn’t worked for you in building your career. Or a big challenge that you’re facing in your career development.

I’ll offer something for the mix: I can talk about our company Outlandish, which is a worker-owned tech co-operative. It was formed by freelance designers and developers who came together to start a company and build a better way of working. I can explain how we all collaborate to find work, organise ourselves and make a living!

If you have an idea for something you’d like to talk about please do put it in the comments or in the Slack channel and let's add it to the evening's plan :)

Hi everyone,

Thanks everyone for signing up to Thursday's Meetup! As we now have quite a few potential attendees (63!) I am going to open the format up from being a round table to being an Unconference.

So, after a short introduction we'll break the 2 hours into sessions each based around a particular topic. Around each topic we will form ourselves into an informal group to discuss and exchange learning and advice... before we head to the pub to continue the conversations. ;)

So the theme and angle are Building Careers in UX: How to advance and develop?

And the sessions will be on whatever topic we want to discuss. You can propose a topic! Just add whatever you would like to talk about / discuss to this thread and we will add it to the available options on the night. The final choice of session topics that run will depend on the level of interest on the night.

Here are a few session ideas to get us started:

  1. Transitioning into UX design
  2. UX interviewing and best practice
  3. Better portfolios
  4. How, where to find work
  5. Training, courses & building your skills
  6. Agencies and contracts
