Meet-Up Discussion

Hi all! Please use this discussion thread to discuss IxDF Meetup Monthly held on Jan 13, 2022 - I had to push it one day (Sorry!). Feel free to ask questions about the place, date and time, agenda of the meeting, or anything else.

Hello!

My name is Felix and I just joined IxDF :) I am starting my studies here by taking courses for the Usability Expert route as I’m most interested in learning more about accessibility in design. Does anyone in the group have experience in this field?

I’d also like to know if the meeting will be recorded. I am usually off work by 6:00PM.

Thank you in advance!

Felix

Hello, Félix! I’m glad to hear from you. First off, accessibility in design is often overlooked and nonetheless in high demand for those who take on the discipline. With that said I commend your interest. I worked with Essential Accessibility (Link to training and certification) as a PM consultant. Although accessibility design is not my discipline per se I’m open to answering any questions?

Hi Mark,

It’s nice to meet you! Thank you for taking the time to respond and offer assistance. I truly appreciate it and I hope I don’t overwhelm you with questions! :)

I was unable to find information on training and certification in the link you provided, unfortunately. From what I could find, it looks like there is only guidance for companies to use their services.

Accessibility and disability rights are topics I have had a growing interest in over the years. I am coming to the conclusion that combining these passions with my love for design is an ideal career path for me.

My biggest question is how should I approach entering the field? I recently completed my B.S. in Interactive Media Design where I learned the foundations of Human-Computer Interaction and understand that additional training and certification would be necessary.

Would you mind sharing your experience in accessibility design in further detail?

Hello Felix,

Welcome to the Dallas Group! We do not record the sessions to make sure we keep it an open forum where everyone can say freely what they think.

I could schedule the meetups at 6pm if everyone else agrees. Especially since some people have gone back to the office.

In terms of Accessibility the two main guidelines (at least my understanding) comes from W3C:

https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/

And from the Federal Government:

https://www.section508.gov/manage/laws-and-policies/

I am sure there are certificates you can take but I don’t think it’s necessary. I always have to design with Accessibility in mind and base my decisions mainly on W3C but some industries like Telecom require e508 compliance because they do contracts with the Federal Government. E508 is more strict than W3C. Being familiar with both makes sure you are covering all your bases. That’s what I do. I currently work on Finance UX and I am more compliant than any of their current systems.

I hope this helps!

Hello! I’m new to IxDF. I look forward to meeting you all.

Hello! I just joined IxDF and this local group. I live in Fort Worth. I have a one-person freelance website design business, but I’m eager to learn more about UX design and research. My hope is to get a full-time job in the fall. Nice to meet y’all!

Meet-up attendees

Members can show their interest to attend a meet-up by clicking “Attend this meet-up” button. In addition, since Local Groups events are open to all, non-members can also attend these meet-ups.

Members might be bringing their non-member friends to a Local Group meet-up (and you’re welcome to do the same), but their non-member friends will not be shown as “attending” because this feature is only available to members.

P.S.: Note that the number of attendees is not an indication of its value! Small meet-ups work perfectly, and can facilitate deeper, more fruitful conversations.
