Meet-Up Discussion

Hi all! Please use this discussion thread to discuss UX job hunt help + coffee held on Sep 15, 2020.

Feel free to ask questions about the place, date and time, agenda of the meeting, or anything else.

Hello,

I am interested in meeting people, talk about the job hunt and how Covid has affected the UX Design market.

Location hasn't been allocated yet!

Hi Mahmoud, will this be a physical meeting or a virtual 'coffe' meeting on Zoom? Many thanks

Amit

Hello Amit,

I was considering a physical meet-up but if more than 10 people are interested then it has to be a virtual meeting for obvious reasons.

Of course it would be great to meet 'for real'. Yet, for practical reasons, I would prefer a virtula meeting on this occasion, if that works for everyone else.

Agreed

Hi - I would love to join too and I agree that a physical meeting may be out of question for now. How many of us so far?

Hello Federica,

Sorry I missed your message,

I don't know how many people are going to be on there to be honest, but even if few it would be nice to have a chat.

Hi all! Physical meeting will be possible according the last UK government measures?

Not from Monday, no more than 6 people

I'm in! virtual please

👍🏻

I just want to be clear that this is only to chat and discuss how Covid has affected others and try and get help from each other. I have been struggling to find a job and I want to share and hear what others have experienced as well and hopefully make virtual friends.

I will add the zoom link tomorrow if people are still interested, shall we say start at 10am and end whenever we are done?

Hi Mahmoud,

I am interested.

hi all, is this meet still happening with the new restrictions imposed by the government?

Hi Mahmoud, I will drop in when I can. Please send the link to debi@orodesign.co.uk. Thanks!

Great to hear Arup, this meeting will be a virtual one via zoom.

Looking forward to joining us Debi, I'll send you the link once posted.

I am sorry that I missed this! Hope we can 'get together' again soon.

My story is I am transitioning from other types of writing, journalism, copywriting, advocacy/community organising, and have had a couple of first interviews, but whilst my knowledge of user experience is growing, I am getting the impression that I need to build up a portfolio to get anywhere. Cheers.

Hello Lee,

Yes, the portfolio is very important. It helps you to put the information that you want to show and the ability to show others what you are capable of doing.

For sure! I have a portfolio, but it's more copywriting and content writing, with just some interface writing. I am getting the impression that for some UX jobs, including UX writer jobs, you need to show the whole process, including the research and prototyping, right? I would love to carry on this conversation in a Zoom or, even better, over a coffee! Maybe we could have smaller get-togethers for now...? Where are you based, Mahmoud?

I don't know what they require from a UX writer to be honest but I think that the requirements for a portfolio should be very similar. Showing your work is essential, the reason you are doing it and how you got there (the who, what, why and how) and to show that is basically the process. Research, sketching, paper prototyping, testing, prototyping (low and high fidelity) but again this is for UX Designer not sure about UX writer.

It would be great to get together, not sure how tight these restrictions are going to get, I'm in Southeast London

I think you may be right! I'm in South East too! Between Crystal Palace and Penge. Would be great to meet, and we could see if up to four others want to come too, what do you think?

Yea, absolutely if possible.

Hey Mahmoud! When's good?

Hey Mahmoud and Lee,

I am in Southeast too and would be up for a coffee meetup. If you don't mind an extra.

Meet-up attendees

Members can show their interest to attend a meet-up by clicking “Attend this meet-up” button. In addition, since Local Groups events are open to all, non-members can also attend these meet-ups.

Members might be bringing their non-member friends to a Local Group meet-up (and you’re welcome to do the same), but their non-member friends will not be shown as “attending” because this feature is only available to members.

P.S.: Note that the number of attendees is not an indication of its value! Small meet-ups work perfectly, and can facilitate deeper, more fruitful conversations.
