Howard Wainer was born Howard Charles Goldhaber in Brooklyn New York, on October 26, 1943. He received a BS in mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965 and an AM and PhD from Princeton inpsychometrics in 1967 and 1968 respectively. He taught at Temple University and The University of Chicago before moving to the Bureau of Social Science Research during the Carter administration. He was a Principal Research Scientist at ETS for 21 years before assuming his current position asDistinguished Research Scientist at the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is also an adjunct Professor of Statistics at the Wharton School of theUniversity of Pennsylvania. He has published more than 350 articles and chapters in scholarly journals and books; his 17th book, Testlet Response Theory and its Applications, was published by Cambridge University Press in October of 2006.
