Inclusive Design: Build Inclusion Into Your Design Process
Design is full of decisions about your users, which means you need to understand the unique needs of your users for your design choices to be meaningful. However, due to unintended biases, you might leave out important user groups in your design process.
Leaving users out of your design and development process is risky for your product or service strategy. Excluding users can lead to lost opportunities, missed needs, negative PR, and unhappy users.
Exclusion is the act of leaving users out. Inclusive Design puts the focus on bringing users back into the design process. Ultimately, the goal of Inclusive Design is to meet user needs—especially those impacted by historical or societal bias.
In UX design, inclusion (and its absence) can have a massive impact. The choices made while designing a product can make or break the experience for various underrepresented user groups such as people with disabilities, elderly users and people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who might struggle with adopting and using technology.
And then there’s the cultural element—inclusive design helps ensure that products are relevant, useful and culturally open to people of color, people of various gender identities and orientations.
Likewise, Inclusive Design is critical for ethically aligned design efforts involving emerging tech (AI, VR/AR, IoT etc). To be clear, the past decade has shown if you don't practice inclusion, you will end up with unhappy users and a poor public image.
In this 1-hour Master Class webinar, Frank Spillers will show you:
- The business case for Inclusive Design
- Examples of Inclusive Design patterns
- How to apply them towards product and service development
- How to introduce process tweaks that lead to Inclusive Design
- How inclusion can be practiced end-to-end from business problem definition to design to testing and even marketing
- How UX plays a key role in Inclusive Design and Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts
The webinar also includes a live Q&A with Frank, where you can directly ask him your questions about how to practice inclusive design even better.
When inclusion is applied to hiring practices, it helps shape a better organizational culture with more representation. Likewise, inclusive design can bring more diverse user groups into the design process, helping shape better products, as well as a better mindset among the design community.
