Karel Vredenburg is Program Director for Design Leadership at IBM. He has responsibility for the visual and interaction/user experience design of IBM software, hardware, websites, and services.  He leads the development of IBM\'s user experience processes, methods, and tools andtheir deployment company-wide, and the leadership of IBM\'s team of userexperience practitioners. He joined IBM in 1988 after having donegraduate studies, research, and teaching at the University of Toronto.He introduced UCD at IBM in 1993 and assumed his present company-widerole in 1995. He has written over 50 conference and journalpublications. He recently published a book entitled \"User-CenteredDesign: An Integrated Approach,\" co-authored another book entitled\"Constructing Superior Software,\" and served as special issue editorfor the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction specialissue entitled \"Designing the Total User Experience at IBM.\" He is a member ofseveral industry committees and working groups, including theInternational Standards Organization Human Centered Design Committee,the National Science and Engineering Research Council UCD EducationCommittee, and the National Institute for Standards and TechnologyCommon Industry Format Usability Working Group. He is based in Toronto,Canada.
