Peter Morville

Author: Peter Morville

Peter Morville is president and founder of Semantic Studios, a leading information architecture, user experience, and findability consultancy.

He is best known for helping to create the discipline of information architecture, and he serves as a passionate advocate for the critical roles that search and findability play in defining the user experience.

Peter\'s new book Search Patterns (co-created with Jeffery Callender) illustrates patterns of behavior and design across the categories of web, e-commerce, enterprise, desktop, mobile, social, and realtime search and discovery; and covers such diverse topics as relevance ranking, faceted navigation, multi-touch, and augmented reality.

Peter\'s last book, Ambient Findability, explores search, wayfinding, marketing, information interaction, literacy, librarianship, authority, and culture at the crossroads of ubiquitous computing and the Internet.

Peter is also co-author (with Louis Rosenfeld) of the best-selling book, Information Architecture for the World Wide Web (over 120,000 copies), named "Best Internet Book of 1998" by Amazon and "The Most Useful Book on Web Design on the Market" by usability guru Jakob Nielsen.

As Chief Executive Officer of Argus Associates (1994-2001), Peter helped build one of the world's most respected information architecture firms, serving clients such as AT&T, Barron's, HP, IBM, L.L.Bean, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, Vanguard and the Weather Channel. He has also worked with libraries, universities, nonprofits and foundations.

Peter is a founder and past president of the IA Institute and has served on the ASIS&T board of directors and the Z39.19 advisory group. He now serves on the advisory boards of Rosenfeld Media, Faz, Clueray, the Journal of Information Architecture, the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences, and Project Information Literacy.

Peter has managed teams of project managers, information architects, interaction designers, usability engineers, content authors, graphic designers and software developers to construct successful web sites, intranets, portals, online communities and information services. On user experience projects, he often collaborates with design firm Q LTD.

Peter holds an advanced degree in library and information science from the University of Michigan's School of Information, where he has also served on the faculty. In 2008, the school presented him with the Alumni Achievement Award for his contributions to the field. In 2007, Peter was honored by AIIP with the Roger Summit Award.

An internationally distinguished speaker, Peter provides keynotes and seminars on such topics as user experience, knowledge management, information architecture, ambient findability, and the future of search.

Peter's work has been featured in many publications and programs including Business Week, CIO Insight, The Economist, Fortune, MSNBC, NPR, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.
