Rob Procter

Author: Rob Procter

Professor

My research interests lie in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and, in particular, the sociology of information and communication technology-based innovation: how human factors - cognitive, organisational and social - shape the design, development, adoption and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). I have undertaken research a wide variety of application domains, organisational contexts and sectors, including financial services, health services, manufacturing and research. I specialise in conducting detailed ethnographic studies of the use of ICT systems in the workplace and the home.

Prior to moving to the University of Manchester in 2004, I was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, where I initiated the teaching of Human-Computer Interaction at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. In 2000, I founded the Social Informatics Cluster, a group within the School of Informatics dedicated to inter-disciplinary research into the development and use of ICTs.
